Provides further information regarding the efficacy of vitamin E in the mitigation of long-term tardive dyskinesia in a predominantly older population. 40 32–80 yr old male and female schizophrenic and schizoaffective inpatients with tardive dyskinesia participated in a double-blind, randomized crossover group study that lasted for 20 wks. Assessments for tardive dyskinesia, using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS), was taken at baseline and repeated every 4 wks, prior to crossover, and then every 4 wks until completion of the study. Repeated measures of AIMS scores for both treatment periods showed no significant differences between vitamin E- and placebo-treated patients. Addition of vitamin E or placebo did not adversely affect patient mental status as measured by a brief psychiatric rating scale. All of the patients tolerated vitamin E very well, and no side effects were either observed or reported. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
