OBJECTIVE:

To explore the hypoglycemic effects, curative effects and side effects of combined berberine and glipizide on patients with type 2 diabetes.

METHODS:

One hundred fifty two patients with type 2 diabetes were classified into three groups at random:glipizide(group A),berberine(group B) and berberine combined with glipizide(group C).Different drugs were administrated to patients in various group, respectively. Then the concentration of fasting plasma glucose(FPG),insulin,C peptide, triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TCH),high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C),2 hours post prandial blood glucose(PBG) and percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1C) were monitored to evaluate the curative effects of various treatment.

RESULTS:

The FPG and PBG were decreased efficaciously under three processes, and the effective rate of group C was the highest(P0.05) when compared with group A and B.Glipizide had no effects on metabolism of blood lipids but had some effects on improvement of insulin resistance;administration of berberine or berberine combined glipizide on these patients could not only improve insulin resistance and recover the function of pancreatic island effectually, but also improve the metabolism of blood lipids,no obvious side effects were observed in this research.

CONCLUSION:

Administration of glipizide combined with berberine has satisfactory synergistic effect on patients with type 2 diabetes, and they can effectively decrease the level of blood lipids, improve the status of insulin resistance and recover the function of pancreatic island, and no obvious side effects were observed.
