Investigated the efficacy of intensive isometric neck strength training and lighter endurance training of neck muscles in the rehabilitation of women with chronic, nonspecific neck pain. The study design was that of a randomized controlled trial and the sample included 180 25-53 yr old female office workers who reported neck pain for more than 6 mo. Ss were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 training groups or to the control group. The strength training group used an elastic band to practice isometric neck strengthening and stabilization exercises. The endurance training group performed dynamic neck exercises, which included lifting the head up from the supine and prone positions. In addition, both groups performed dynamic exercises for the shoulders and upper extremities and both underwent a multimodal rehabilitation program. Neck pain was assessed using a visual analog scale and disability was measured by a modified shoulder and neck pain index and the Vernon neck disability index. Outcome measures were taken at baseline and after the 12-month intervention period. Findings show that both the isometric strength and dynamic endurance training programs effectively decreased pain and disability in women with chronic neck pain during the 1-year follow-up period.
