OBJECTIVE:

To observe the effect of metformin hydrochloride on patients' weight and blood sugar when adjuvant clozapine is used in the treatment of refractory schizophrenia.

METHODS:

78 patients with refractory schizophrenia treated with clozapine were randomly divided into the research group (metformin + clozapine) and the control group (clozapine). The patient's weight and blood sugar were observed every 4 weeks, and the treatment course was 12 weeks.

RESULTS:

From the 4th week onwards, the weight of the patients in the study group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05), and at the 8th week P<0.01. The fasting blood glucose of the patients in the control group was significantly higher than that of the study group at the 8th week (P<0.05), and P<0.01 at the 12th week.

CONCLUSION:

Metformin has a certain control effect on the adverse reactions of patients with clozapine in the treatment of refractory schizophrenia, that is, weight gain and blood sugar elevation. It has no obvious adverse reactions, is safe and effective, and is worthy of auxiliary application.
