Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, causing symptoms such as rigidity, instability and, most typical, tremor. The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review on costs and utility in patients with PD in Europe. When applying the search criteria for costs 127 unique published papers were found. Of these, only five fulfilled the inclusion criteria, none of the other contained primary data on the cost of disease. All of the studies were bottom-up cost of illness studies. This review found only five studies on the cost of PD, representing five European countries. These studies show that PD is associated with high costs, and this is likely to be true for the other European countries as well. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
